What Are Stanchions?
Stanchions are a simple yet effective tool that is often utilized for crowd control purposes. They are essentially a series of posts that come with ropes or retractable belts attached to them to form a barrier. These barriers are commonly used to manage crowds around exhibits or to demarcate the boundaries of a checkout line. While ropes are traditionally made from velvet or cotton, velour is also used for the same purpose, as it is more cost-effective in production.
Different Types of Stanchions
Classic Post and Rope Stanchions
A Post and rope stanchions are a popular choice for crowd control. They consist of a simple stanchion post with loops at the top where stanchion ropes can be clipped into place, connecting one post to another. This creates a simple yet elegant barricade that can be easily moved and set up. The stanchion post can be customized to match the interior design of the space where it will be used.
Classic post and velvet rope stanchion barrier kits often include a polished stanchion post with a decorative finial on the top and a sturdy velvet rope draped between a pair of matching posts. The stanchion ropes are designed with sturdy cores that allow the velvet ropes to drape in a smooth arc. These ropes come in a variety of colors and materials, not just velvet, and in a variety of lengths to accommodate different spacing preferences.
Classic stanchion posts are available in a neutral black color, but polished finishes such as polished brass and polished silver are more commonly used. Decorative finial tops can make these posts even more reminiscent of classic red carpet events. These classic stanchion posts contribute to an elegant VIP look.
In summary, classic post and rope stanchions are a simple yet effective solution for crowd control and maintaining an elegant aesthetic. Their customizable features, sturdy construction and a wide variety of colors and materials make them a versatile choice for any interior design. The polished finishes and decorative finial tops add a touch of sophistication and glamour to any event.
Retractable Belt Barrier Stanchions
Retractable belt barrier stanchions are a highly versatile and practical crowd control tool, featuring built-in belts that can be extended or retracted as required. These stanchion posts typically feature belt receivers at the top that can be used to clip a neighboring post's belt into place, thereby eliminating the need for stanchion ropes. Retractable belt barrier stanchions are commonly employed in a range of public settings, including airports, shopping malls, and bus stations.
One of the primary advantages of retractable belt barrier stanchions is their ease of use and versatility. The retracting belt contains no slack, making it ideal for use in even complex line formations. These belts are available in a range of lengths, colors, and widths and can even be ordered as custom-printed belt barriers with bespoke messages or branding. This feature is particularly useful in situations where crowd control instructions need to be conveyed, such as "Line Starts Here" or "Do Not Enter." The use of such instructions can further contribute to crowd organization. Logos can also be incorporated into the design of these belt barriers, which is particularly helpful in instances where travelers are searching for the ticketing line for a specific airline.
Retractable belt barriers can also be equipped with secondary belts positioned closer to the ground. These dual belt stanchions are designed to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), which requires barriers to be situated at a specific proximity to the floor to allow for their detection by canes. This design feature reinforces the barrier, making it more challenging for individuals to duck underneath and bypass the intended barrier.
Retractable belt barrier stanchions that are specifically designed for durability and visibility are commonly referred to as safety stanchions. These stanchions are the most appropriate solution for industrial environments that require visual barriers as part of their safety plans. The safety stanchion belts come in high-visibility colors, such as yellow, red, or orange, or with the common yellow and black diagonal stripe pattern that is frequently used for workplace safety. Custom-printed belt barriers can also be used to display specific safety messages that can be customized to meet each workplace's unique requirements. Safety belts can also be longer or wider to fit larger industrial spaces. Additionally, safety stanchion posts are available in high-visibility colors like yellow, red, and orange. When extra-long belts are used, the posts are typically wider as well. The bases of safety stanchions are designed for extra durability, with rubber bases being a popular choice. These bases can withstand occasional weight from passing vehicle tires without sustaining damage, unlike standard metal bases. Furthermore, the rubber bases are also more weather-resistant, making them suitable for outdoor use and capable of lasting longer. Overall, safety stanchions are the optimal solution for industrial settings that require visual barriers as part of their safety plans. With their high-visibility colors, customizable safety messages, and durable bases, safety stanchions can help ensure that workers are safe and secure on the job.
Plastic stanchions serve as an alternative to post and rope stanchions, but they are relatively simpler and not aesthetically optimized. These stanchions feature basic plastic posts with loops at the top, allowing the connection of caution tape or plastic chain barriers from one post to another. These stanchions offer a cost-effective, lightweight, and portable solution. As they are made of plastic, they come in a wide range of custom colors, including matching plastic chains to maintain branding colors. Additionally, they are available in high visibility colors, particularly where safety is paramount. It's worth noting that some customers opt for caution tape instead of plastic chains to pair these simple plastic stanchion posts.
Classic post and rope stanchions are an unbeatable choice for sophisticated, black-tie events such as proms, weddings, and corporate gatherings. These velvet rope stanchions are the ultimate choice for events that aim to replicate a red-carpet experience or match an existing elegant theme. Museums, concert halls, theaters, and other historical buildings must require these stanchions to complement the established decor. Nightclubs should prefer these stanchions because they provide an attractive ticketing and entry line. In contrast, corporate events such as conferences and job fairs must opt for more affordable and portable plastic stanchions. These stanchions are the perfect choice for event venues that host various events, requiring quick barrier setup and removal. Plastic stanchions are also the most common choices for outdoor environments such as outdoor dining patios or even construction areas within sidewalks and parking lots. Retractable belt barriers are the go-to solution for large spaces with high foot traffic, such as airports, bus stations, shopping malls, and sports arenas. Due to their ease of setup and versatility, they are also the most useful for conferences and job fairs, particularly for complex line formations.
Here are some frequently asked stanchion questions:
Q: Can I add signs to my stanchions?
A: Yes. A regular belt stanchion sign frame or topper will come with mounting cup attached. This will slip over the top the tube where the belt cassette is located. A traditional rope stanchion will need to be tapped or threaded. This is typically done when the posts are being ordered. If you alreayd have the posts, we may be able to supply you with a new top which would have the threads in it. You would order a sign frame which just has a threaded post to screw into the top of your post. Only flat top or crown top posts can have a threaded or tapped post top.
Q: How many posts do I get when I order?
A: Any item being ordered would be a quantity of one unless you are purchasing a bundle / kit of products. If you are ordering a bundle, it will specifically say a quantity of example: "12 stanchions and 1 cart"
Q: How far apart should I space my stanchions?
A: When using a 6 foot long rope, your stanchion posts should be spaced out about 5.5 foot apart. 5 or 6 inches of slack in a 6 foot rope should allow a natural looking drape effect. For a belt stanchion, you will want to leave 6 inches to 1 foot of belt in the head of the post. When using a 11 foot belt, you would space the posts 10 foot to 10 foot 6 inches a part. This will give you a good idea of how many stanchions you need for each run of stanchions.
Q: What accessories may I need for my stanchions?
A: Many customers like to use a stanchion cart for storing or moving their posts. Both rope stanchions and belt stanchions can use a receiving clip / receiving loop, when using a fixe / temporary structure to start a line. A rope could also use two receiving loops to be hung in an opening and not use a post. Sign frames or sign toppers are a great way to provide directional messages or branding for sponsorships.
